This newsletter provides an update on recent activity and developments in which the Financial Inclusion Commission has been engaged. Since our last update, the Commission has continued its ongoing stakeholder engagement programme, and has reached out to the new Government and Ministerial team to introduce the work of the Commission.

Overview of activity 

July Commission Meeting
The Commission met to discuss how best to engage with the new Government on the issue of financial exclusion. We welcome the new Prime Minister’s commitment to an inclusive approach to social and economic issues, and we are keen to work collaboratively with the new administration, at a time where innovative policy ideas may be required to address the UK’s upcoming challenges. Our message to Government is clear: we are here to act as a sounding board on financial inclusion policy, and believe that financial inclusion is essential to a fair, responsible and inclusive society. Our vision remains for Government to adopt our recommendation that financial inclusion be made a central policy priority for the whole of government, overseen by a Minister for Financial Health. 
 
At the July meeting, we were also joined by Chris Curry and Daniela Silcock from the Pensions Policy Institute, who presented their latest research on the impact of auto-enrollment on the pensions gap. Chris and Daniela have published a blog piece on our website which can be found here. The Commission hopes to do more work on Pensions and Insurance in 2016.
                                                            
House of Lords Financial Exclusion Select Committee Inquiry
The House of Lords Ad-Hoc Committee on Financial Exclusion is now well and truly underway. The Committee has launched its call for evidence, and the deadline for submissions for written evidence is 14 September 2016. The Commission will be responding to this consultation, and if you would like to do so, the link can be found here. The Commission is also due to provide Oral Evidence to the Committee on 13 September 2016.
 
Party Conferences 2016
Representatives from the Commission will be attending Conservative and Labour Party Conference this year. Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to meet representatives from the Commission at the Conference. 

At Conservative Party Conference we are hosting a drinks reception to bring together Parliamentarians and other stakeholders, and hope to be joined by the new Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Simon Kirby MP, who has been invited. The drinks reception will take place on Monday 3rd October, 17.45-19.00 at the Castle Fine Art Gallery, Birmingham International Convention Centre.
